About

Horden is a village and civil parish on the Durham coast, east of Peterlee in County Durham. The settlement developed around Horden Colliery, which opened around 1900 and closed in 1987, and the street pattern still shows the rows of terraced housing built for mining families. The coastline here includes a sandy foreshore known locally as Horden Beach and stretches of coastal grassland. Local landmarks record the industrial past in reclaimed land and community buildings that served the pit and its workforce.

Transport links were altered in recent years when Horden railway station reopened in 2020, restoring a rail stop on the Durham Coast Line and changing commuting options for the village. Community life remains centred on parish facilities, sports grounds and small shops, with volunteer groups active in maintaining green spaces and the seafront. The village sits at the edge of a coastal plain that meets the North Sea, so tides and coastal paths shape daily life and local walking routes along the shore.
