About

Horrabridge and Mary Tavy lie on the western edge of Dartmoor in West Devon, each village set along a river valley that leads onto the moor. Horrabridge developed where the River Walkham is crossed by a long granite packhorse bridge; the bridge and the river remain a focus for local routes and short riverside walks. Narrow lanes link the village to Tavistock and to rights of way that climb onto the moor, and small community facilities sit close to the bridge and high street.

Mary Tavy occupies the Tavy valley a few miles to the north, at the foot of moorland ridges. The parish shows layers of land use: fields and woods in the valley, and traces of 18th–19th century metal mining on the moorland fringe, where stone engine houses and leats mark former workings. Paths from the village lead straight onto open ground used for walking, riding and wildlife observation, and local lanes give views across the river valley toward the western slopes of Dartmoor.
