Houghton Town

Houghton Town, often called Houghton-le-Spring, is centred on a traditional Market Place and a short high street lined with independent shops, cafés and civic buildings. The parish church of St Michael and All Angels stands close to the centre and its churchyard marks the town’s long settlement history. Each October the town hosts Houghton Feast, a week-long event with market stalls, a procession and fairground rides that dates back several centuries and still draws local traders and families to the streets.

The town carries visible traces of its coal-mining past in rows of former miners’ terraces and in place names around the town. Community facilities include a public library and a community centre that run local programmes and clubs. Short lanes and green spaces lead out from the centre into the surrounding countryside, used for daily walks and local sports. The pattern of streets, the market tradition and the annual Feast give a clear sense of the town’s local rhythms and civic life.
