About

Hulme sits immediately south of Manchester city centre, close to the University of Manchester campus. The neighbourhood was reshaped after the post‑war period when the Hulme Crescents, large concrete housing blocks from the late 1960s, were demolished in the early 1990s and replaced with low‑rise homes, community projects and parkland. Local facilities include a community garden centre, Hulme Park and a handful of independent arts and music spaces that grew during regeneration. The Mancunian Way forms a northern boundary, creating a clear edge between Hulme and the Oxford Road corridor.

The University of Manchester’s main campus stretches along Oxford Road, with teaching buildings, research laboratories, the Manchester Museum and the Whitworth linked to nearby parkland. Oxford Road is notable for very high bus frequencies, often described as one of the busiest bus corridors in Europe, which underpins quick public transport links to hospitals, city centre services and student housing. The area mixes lecture halls, libraries, student union venues and cafés, and is busy throughout term time with academic and community activity.
