About

Hythe is a town on the western shore of Southampton Water, within the New Forest district of Hampshire. It sits where shore, salt marsh and built streets meet, with mudflats and creeks that draw waders and small craft at low tide. A defining feature is Hythe Pier: a 700-yard wooden structure that projects into the water and carries a narrow‑gauge electric tram, used by locals and visitors to reach the ferry terminal at the pier head. The waterfront offers views across the water and a string of boatyards and sailing clubs along the shore.

The town centre runs a short distance inland from the quay, with a high street of shops, cafés and a few nineteenth-century buildings that reflect its maritime past. Regular footpaths and lanes lead from the streets to waterside promenades and to tracks that enter the outer New Forest boundary, making the area a practical base for walkers and people who work on or use the water. Transport links include local roads and the ferry connection across Southampton Water.
