About

The New Forest district in Hampshire, South East England covers a mix of woodland, heath, grazing pasture and Solent shoreline. The district contains much of the New Forest National Park and includes towns such as Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst, Lymington, Ringwood and Fordingbridge. Roads and small lanes cross commons and ancient oak woodland, and the coastline near Lymington and Milford-on-Sea is edged by salt marsh and estuary channels. Local administration is based in Lyndhurst and services are centred on the larger market towns and coastal ports within the district.

Commons and grazing shape the landscape and local practice. Ponies, cattle and pigs still roam under commoners’ rights, and seasonal pannage sees pigs turned out to eat fallen beech mast in autumn. Agisters working for the Verderers check stock and mark animals, a continuing legal system for the forest. Recreational routes, working forestry, and tidal creeks sit alongside medieval field boundaries and pollarded oaks, so settlements and commons remain closely linked in land management and daily life.
