About

Ivybridge sits in the South Hams district of Devon at the southern edge of Dartmoor, with the River Erme running through the town. The place takes its name from a stone bridge over the Erme once thick with ivy; that crossing and the river remain central features of the townscape. The A38 lies close by, providing road links without changing the town’s compact layout, and a rail station nearby connects the area to the regional rail network.

The town expanded in the 19th century around mills on the Erme, and traces of that industrial pattern survive alongside modern shops, cafes and community facilities on the main streets. Riverside paths and smaller footbridges give access to green spaces and routes up toward Dartmoor, used by walkers and cyclists. Local markets and community events use the town centre and riverside areas, and facilities such as leisure centres and schools serve nearby villages as well as residents of Ivybridge itself.
