About

Killamarsh is a town in North East Derbyshire on the edge of the South Yorkshire boundary, set along the course of the River Rother. It lies between Sheffield and Chesterfield and has road links that make it a local commuter centre. The built area mixes housing, small shops and community facilities, with fields and wooded strips extending into the surrounding farmland. A network of public footpaths follows the river and the lines of former railways, giving direct walking routes to neighbouring villages and green spaces.

The town grew around coal mining and ironworking in the 19th and early 20th centuries; traces of that past remain in the pattern of streets and reclaimed industrial land now used for open space and allotments. Local clubs, primary schools and a community centre form focal points for residents. On clear days the floodplain and the river corridor are used by birdwatchers and anglers, and former railway cuttings now carry paths that link residential areas to riverside meadows and woodlands.
