Kippax East, Micklefield & Allerton Bywater

Kippax East, Micklefield and Allerton Bywater form a cluster of villages and settlements on the eastern edge of Leeds. The area runs from Kippax village north-east toward Micklefield and down to Allerton Bywater beside the River Aire. Micklefield railway station provides a direct local rail link to Leeds and York, and local roads connect into the A1(M) corridor. Open farmland and former pit land sit alongside village streets and small retail parades, with community halls and primary schools serving residents.

The communities share a mining history: pit shafts and railway sidings were part of everyday life until the late 20th century, and sections of the former colliery estate have been turned into greenways and walking routes along river corridors. Local clubs and parish churches remain focal points, and village signs and memorials note mining and railway heritage. Footpaths follow old tramways, and occasional industrial relics appear beside newer housing, giving the area a pattern of layered land use.
