About

Leigh North sits within the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, in Greater Manchester, and covers the northern part of Leigh town. The area is mostly residential, with a mix of Victorian terraced streets laid out during the 19th century for cotton and coal workers and pockets of post-war housing. Traces of the old Bolton and Leigh Railway still appear in embankments and reclaimed sections, and several former mill sites have been adapted for small businesses and light industry. Local primary schools, a community centre and a cluster of shops around a small parade provide everyday services for residents.

Green spaces are modest but used: pocket parks, allotments and playing fields lie between residential streets, and bus routes connect north Leigh to other parts of the borough. Community groups run events at church halls and the community centre, and local planning tends to focus on maintaining services while repurposing industrial plots. The road pattern and much of the building stock reflect the town’s industrial past, with narrow streets and short terraces giving way to wider avenues around later estates.
