About

Liskeard sits on the A38 in southeast Cornwall, where the road links Plymouth and Bodmin. The town is the junction for the Looe Valley Line, the single‑track branch that runs down to the fishing port of Looe, and the railway presence shapes part of the town centre. St Martin’s parish church stands close to the marketplace; its medieval tower marks one end of Fore Street. On clear days the ruined engine houses and spoil heaps of Caradon Hill are visible to the west, reminders of the 19th‑century copper and tin workings that once shaped local employment.

The town grew as a market centre for surrounding farms and still hosts markets and weekly trading in the square. Local projects and the small museum record mining, railway and agricultural history alongside more recent community initiatives. Footpaths and lanes lead out to Bodmin Moor and to nearby woodland, and the rail and road links make Liskeard a practical base for exploring this part of Cornwall without relying on coastal centres.
