About

Cornwall occupies the far south‑west peninsula of England, bordered to the north and south by the Atlantic and to the east by the River Tamar. The county town is Truro; other towns include Penzance, St Ives, Newquay, Falmouth and St Austell. Terrain ranges from granite moorland on Bodmin Moor to the Lizard Peninsula and low river estuaries. Industrial archaeology from tin and copper mining is visible in the form of stone engine houses and spoil heaps around Redruth and Camborne, part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape UNESCO site, and the Eden Project’s biomes sit in the clay country near St Austell.

Cornwall’s economy mixes fishing, farming, shipbuilding, and visitor services, with ports and marinas along natural harbours such as Falmouth and Padstow. Local culture retains Cornish place names and a language revival; food traditions include the pasty and pilchard fishing. Transport links run along the north and south coasts and into the Tamar valley; administrative services are provided by Cornwall Council as a unitary authority.
