About

Lockwood is a district of Huddersfield in the Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees, West Yorkshire, lying in the valley of the River Holme just south of the town centre. The area grew with 19th-century industry and still shows that history in riverside mills and rows of stone terraced housing. Streets meet the river and its small tributaries, and the pattern of mills, narrow lanes and yard entrances reflects the layout of a former textile area rather than a planned suburb.

Community life is centred on local shops, pubs and a handful of community centres that serve nearby neighbourhoods. A railway line crosses the valley on a long brick viaduct with repeated arches, marking the route between Huddersfield and settlements to the south; freight and passenger trains remain part of the local soundscape. Small greens and play spaces are scattered between housing blocks, and the river corridor provides short walks and links to adjoining parts of Huddersfield.
