About

The Loose and Coxheath area sits on the south-eastern edge of Maidstone, centred on the village of Loose and the open ground of Coxheath. Loose occupies a narrow valley cut by the Loose Stream; the valley contains a succession of former mill sites, mill ponds and stone bridges that reflect centuries of water-powered industry. The village spine follows a steep lane with a mix of older cottages and later housing, and a parish church and village hall provide local focal points.

Coxheath rises from the valley onto a sweep of common land. The common was used as a military training ground and review ground in the late 18th century and the open contours still show the pattern of tracks and greens that grew from that history. Modern Coxheath has a village green, sports pitches, a primary school and small shops clustered along the main road. The area has routes for walking and cycling that link the common with the Loose Valley, and regular bus services connect both communities with Maidstone town centre.
