About

Lymington sits on the western shore of the Solent at the mouth of the Lymington River. The town has a narrow quay and pier where a passenger ferry links to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight; boatyards and yacht marinas line the river upstream. A weekly market runs along the cobbled high street and quay; workshops for boatbuilding and sailmaking are still active. Saltmarshes and mudflats beside the river are a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and channels reveal creeks at low tide that are used by dinghy sailors and shorebirds.

Boldre lies a mile or so inland, within the New Forest National Park, with lanes opening onto common land and forest tracks. Ponies, cattle and donkeys graze freely on nearby heath and oak woodland; public footpaths lead from the village to river meadows and gravelly lanes used historically by herd managers. Local facilities include a village hall and a parish church; the area forms a practical base for walking, sailing and observing the forest’s grazing system.
