About

Manningtree and Mistley sit on the banks of the River Stour in the Tendring district of Essex. Manningtree is often described as Britain’s smallest town and grew around the river crossing and the railway station on the line towards Ipswich and Colchester. The town centre has a mix of local shops, a market feel and residential streets that slope down to the water, where moored small craft and a working quay mark the long relationship with the river.

Across a short stretch of riverbank, Mistley’s waterfront is defined by old warehouses, a stretch known as Mistley Quay and the remains of an 18th-century church tower called Mistley Towers. Historic maltings and riverside buildings cluster near the quay, reflecting a past of river trade and processing. Salt marshes and reed beds along the Stour support wintering and migratory birds, and small boat activity remains common; the pattern of piers, steps and slipways gives the shoreline a practical, working character.
