About

Martock is a large village and civil parish in south Somerset centred on a long market place and a broad village green that runs along West Street. The layout reflects its medieval role as a market and cloth town: houses and former merchant buildings face the open space where fairs and trading once took place. The parish church of St Andrew dominates the centre; the building has elements from the 13th and 15th centuries and long-standing burial plots beside the chancel. Narrow lanes and stone walls link the market area to small clusters of cottages and former workshops.

The surrounding parish contains fields, hedgerows and pockets of pasture that show strip-field patterns and water-meadow management from earlier agriculture. Former wool and cloth production left a pattern of mills and converted buildings rather than large industrial sites. A conservation area protects much of the core, and community facilities, shops and a primary school sit close to the market space, keeping services within walking distance of the village centre.
