About

Medway sits along the tidal River Medway in South East England and includes Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Strood and Rainham. The river shapes the district: quays, bridges and former naval facilities line its banks. Chatham Historic Dockyard preserves shipbuilding and dockyard buildings, including the long Ropery used for producing cordage for sailing ships. In Rochester the Norman keep of the castle remains a prominent stone tower, notable as one of the tallest surviving Norman keeps, and the cathedral traces a bishopric back to the early medieval period. These sites sit amid rows of streets, industrial yards and riverside promenades that follow the Medway through town centres.

Beyond the urban centre, low-lying marsh and reclaimed farmland extend onto the Hoo Peninsula where saltmarsh and mudflats meet the river channel. Small villages, naval defences and freight terminals are interwoven with this landscape. Transport routes concentrate along the river, with road and rail crossings connecting the towns, while local industry, heritage tourism and river services form visible parts of the district’s economy and daily life.
