About

Meltham sits in the Holme Valley within the borough of Kirklees, West Yorkshire. The village runs along the valley floor beside the River Holme and grew in the 19th century around textile mills and engineering works. Former mill buildings remain in the Meltham Mills area and are now used for workshops, offices and local businesses. The centre has a high street with shops, a post office, pubs and community facilities that serve surrounding hamlets and farms.

The landscape around Meltham includes lanes, public footpaths and stretches of upland moorland that rise above the valley, providing direct walking access from the village. The line of the old Meltham branch railway is still visible in places and has shaped parts of the village layout and some roadside buildings. Local clubs, a primary school and regular markets and events reflect a long-established community rooted in the valley’s industrial past and its setting between working land and higher open country.
