About

Mid Devon district sits in central Devon, covering an area of market towns, river valleys and wooded hills. Principal towns are Tiverton, Crediton and Cullompton, linked by the A361 and the M5 corridor at the eastern edge. Crediton retains its parish church and is the birthplace of the eighth‑century missionary Boniface. Local administration centres are based in Tiverton, where the canal basin meets the town and routes connect rural parishes to larger regional centres.

Landscape is marked by the River Exe and its tributary, the River Culm, with stretches of the Culm Valley supporting Culm grassland habitat that hosts marsh fritillary and wetland plants. The Grand Western Canal runs west from Tiverton and survives as a linear park with restored locks and towpaths originally used by small tub boats. Eastern parishes rise toward the Blackdown Hills AONB, while farms, hedgerows and small woodlands shape much of the district outside town limits.
