About

Millbank is a riverside stretch in the City of Westminster running along the north bank of the Thames between Westminster and Vauxhall Bridges. The area is anchored by Tate Britain on Millbank, whose Clore Gallery displays a major bequest of J.M.W. Turner paintings. Millbank Tower marks the northern edge of the riverside road, and a continuous riverside walkway follows the Thames bank. The 19th‑century Millbank Prison once occupied part of the site; traces of that history remain in local street names and sections of old brickwork near the museum entrance.
The area mixes cultural institutions, government offices and residential blocks, with short terraces and council estates set a few streets back from the river. Pimlico station is a short walk inland and mainline services at Victoria and Waterloo are within a short distance, so the area functions as both workplace and neighbourhood. Small riverside cafés and private moorings appear along the bank, and the riverside path is used daily by commuters, residents and visitors to the galleries.
