Milton & Chalk

Milton and Chalk lie on the eastern edge of Gravesend, where low-lying streets meet the Thames foreshore. Milton sits beside Milton Creek, a tidal inlet whose mudflats are exposed at low tide and which has a long history of small-scale riverside industry and wharves. The area mixes terraced and semi-detached housing with pockets of light industrial yards, local shops and primary schools. Paths along the creek give direct access to the river edge and to stretches of salt marsh that form part of the borough’s shoreline landscape.

Chalk occupies a smaller footprint south-east of Milton and retains a village feel around lanes that run off the main route into Gravesend. The place-name reflects the chalk geology beneath the surface, which shaped field patterns and local building materials. Community facilities are concentrated around a hall and a few pubs and shops; bus links and local roads connect residents with Gravesend town centre and the wider road network. The area is essentially residential with a strong connection to the river and to the marshes that fringe the Thames.
