About

The Minehead Outer & Porlock area sits where Exmoor meets the Bristol Channel, running west from the seaside town of Minehead to the settlements around Porlock and Porlock Weir. Minehead contains the coastal holiday resort and the terminus of the West Somerset Railway. Exmoor National Park rises shortly inland, and the South West Coast Path follows the shoreline here. Samuel Taylor Coleridge is associated with Porlock through the famous interruption while he was writing a fragment of verse, an anecdote that connects literature to the locality.

Porlock Weir is a small tidal harbour with stone quays and a channel used by local boats, and nearby Porlock Ridge and Saltmarsh is a recognised coastal nature area. A steep lane descends from the moor into Porlock, and paths from the town lead onto heather moorland where Exmoor ponies are seen. The local economy combines coastal fishing, holiday accommodation and small-scale farming, and the landscape changes quickly from grassy upland to shingle shore along short distances.
