Nelson

Nelson ward occupies a compact area in the southern part of Portsea Island, directly south of Portsmouth's city centre. Its western boundary is defined by the railway line and the docks, while its eastern edge meets the residential streets of Southsea. The ward is primarily a dense residential neighbourhood, characterised by a grid pattern of Victorian and Edwardian terraced housing. The area includes the historic grounds of the Royal Garrison Church and the adjacent Victoria Park.

The ward is anchored by the commercial activity along Albert Road, which serves as a local high street. This central spine features a mix of independent shops, cafes, and pubs. The area is also home to the Kings Theatre, a prominent Edwardian venue. The residential streets are quiet, with many properties featuring small, walled rear gardens. The presence of the church ruins and the park provides green space within the largely built-up environment.
