About

Newark and Sherwood is a district in Nottinghamshire, in the East Midlands, centred on Newark-on-Trent and covering a mix of river valley, low hills and farmland. The River Trent runs through Newark, where the riverside sits beside the ruins of Newark Castle and two railway stations on the East Coast Main Line. Other principal settlements include Southwell, Edwinstowe and Ollerton, linked by A-class roads and local lanes. The district council is based in Newark, and much of the area remains devoted to agriculture, woodland and village life rather than large urban development.

Sherwood Forest and its surrounding woodlands occupy a significant part of the district; footpaths lead to the Major Oak near Edwinstowe, a single tree long associated with local legend. Southwell Minster stands in Southwell as the cathedral and parish church of the area. Community events and markets take place at Newark Showground and in market towns, and the landscape contains a network of cycle routes and public rights of way that connect village greens, pines and arable fields.
