North Ferriby & Swanland

North Ferriby sits on the north bank of the Humber Estuary where a strip of foreshore meets the village. The foreshore produced the Ferriby Boats, sewn-plank craft dating to the Bronze Age, and that archaeological link remains part of local identity. River walks follow the shoreline and paths lead into adjacent farmland; a compact village centre provides basic services and the parish church stands close to the creek and village lanes.

Swanland occupies higher ground on the western edge of the Yorkshire Wolds, with the village water tower visible from surrounding fields. Footpaths and bridleways run onto chalk ridge and down into wooded valleys, connecting lanes, small greens and the village pond. Local facilities include a primary school, village hall and a handful of shops and pubs that serve residents. The two settlements share a practical relationship with the landscape: North Ferriby oriented to the estuary and Swanland to the Wolds, so walking routes, drainage patterns and field boundaries all reflect that contrast.
