North Kensington

North Kensington covers the northern section of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, stretching from the Grand Union Canal northwards. The area is largely residential, characterised by Victorian and Edwardian terraced housing and several notable council estates. It is distinct from the more affluent southern parts of the borough, with a mix of social housing and private developments shaping its streets. The Westway, a major elevated road, cuts through the area, creating a significant physical landmark and dividing line beneath its concrete arches.

The area is home to Portobello Road Market, which extends into Notting Hill, and the large communal green space of Wormwood Scrubs. The Grand Union Canal provides a linear waterway for walking and cycling. A major cultural hub is The Tabernacle, a community arts centre housed in a former church on Powis Square, hosting live music and events. The landscape is also marked by the towering gasometers of the Kensal Green gasworks, industrial relics that dominate the western skyline.
