About

North Lincolnshire sits on the south bank of the Humber Estuary in the Yorkshire and The Humber region. The unitary area covers towns such as Scunthorpe, Brigg and Barton-upon-Humber and stretches inland to the low-lying agricultural plain. Transport routes include the M180 and A15, and Humberside Airport at Kirmington serves the district. Scunthorpe remains associated with iron and steel production and the North Lincolnshire Museum records local industrial and rural history.

The district contains the Isle of Axholme, an area of raised ground and engineered drainage channels laid out over centuries to reclaim peat fen, and the River Ancholme runs through Brigg before reaching the Humber. Settlements on the Isle include Epworth, where John Wesley was born, and market towns that host weekly markets and small industrial estates. River banks, drainage mills and former saltmarsh give way to fields and roadside hedgerows, and local planning balances farmed land with pockets of light industry and transport infrastructure.
