Oakes & South Lindley

Oakes and South Lindley lie on the northwest side of Huddersfield, within Kirklees. The area is largely residential, with rows of stone-built terraces and semi-detached houses that reflect 19th- and early 20th-century building patterns. Streets rise and fall along the ridge above the town, so many roads have noticeable gradients and steps between pavements. Small terraces of shops and local services sit close to housing, providing everyday needs without a long trip into the town centre.

Community life centres on local schools, community halls and sports clubs, with pocket parks and allotments tucked between housing blocks. Bus routes run regularly into Huddersfield and the road network links quickly to the town’s ring roads. Several former mill and warehouse buildings have been adapted for light industry or housing, and a number of houses still show original stone lintels and narrow coal cellars at pavement level, a reminder of the area’s industrial past. The mix of short walks, local shops and regular buses makes the neighbourhood practical for residents.
