About

Okehampton sits on the northern edge of Dartmoor National Park in West Devon, centred on a market town through which the River Okement runs. The town grew around Okehampton Castle, a Norman motte-and-bailey site later adapted by the Courtenay family, and local buildings use the area's granite. To the west of town Meldon Reservoir and its iron viaduct mark the boundary with open moor; the reservoir and former quarry are crossed by walking routes that follow the old railway alignment. Regular passenger trains on the Dartmoor Line link Okehampton to Exeter, restoring a rail connection that had been out of regular use for decades.

The surrounding area combines commonland, pasture and moorland used for grazing and recreation. On the high ground just south of the town Okehampton Camp, an Iron Age earthwork, sits above the Okement valley and gives clear lines into the moor. Routes such as the Granite Way and other converted trackbeds provide traffic-free paths for cyclists and walkers, while local lanes lead to small farms and woodland pockets that meet the open expanse of Dartmoor.
