Osney and Jericho sit just west of Oxford city centre, clustered around the Thames, the canal and a network of back streets. Osney Island is shaped by the River Thames and the Osney Stream; Osney Lock marks the river route where small craft move between pound levels. Jericho follows the canal towpath north from the city, with narrow terraced streets, shops and pubs lining Walton Street and Canal Street. St Barnabas church with its distinctive spire anchors the neighbourhood and the Phoenix Picturehouse shows independent films on Walton Street. Boats moored on the canal and frequent pedestrian links keep the area compact and walkable.

Port Meadow is the open common beside the Thames where horses and cattle continue to graze under historic common-rights. Paths cross the floodplain, which fills in winter, and tracks lead to footbridges that span small channels. At the southern edge the Sheepwash Channel and its railway bridge form a tight junction between meadow, river and the built area, a place where trains pass close over water and towpath crossings. The whole area holds a mix of riverside routes, commons and urban terraces.
