About

Oswaldtwistle sits in the borough of Hyndburn in Lancashire, between Accrington and Haslingden. Its name derives from Old English — Oswald plus twisla — a reference to the meeting of small streams near the original settlement. The town expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries around cotton spinning and weaving, and several mill buildings survive. One former textile complex now operates as Oswaldtwistle Mills, a mixed-use site with craft shops, displays and a small exhibition on local industry that preserves machinery and documentation from the mill era.

The area is made up of compact residential streets, local shops in the town centre and community facilities such as Rhyddings Park and Rhyddings School. Footpaths lead from the town up onto Oswaldtwistle Moor and adjoining open land, used for short walks and local recreation. Stone-built terraces and former mill chimneys remain part of the street pattern, and weekly markets and community events draw on the town’s industrial heritage, which is visible in building fabric and in the collections kept at the local mill site.
