Owenkillew ward covers a large, sparsely populated rural area in the eastern part of Fermanagh and Omagh district. Its landscape is dominated by the Sperrin Mountains, with high moorland and peat bog defining the terrain. The area is primarily agricultural, featuring upland sheep farming and forestry. Settlements are small and scattered, consisting of small villages and townlands connected by narrow roads that follow the contours of the hills.
The region contains the headwaters of the Owenkillew River, which flows northward through the mountains. Evidence of historical settlement includes ancient sites like the Beaghmore Stone Circles, a complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age alignments set in the peatland. The remote geography has fostered a strong tradition of Irish language and culture, with the Gaeltacht area of Carntogher lying within its bounds. Land use remains focused on the natural resources of the upland environment.
