About

Pallion sits on the south bank of the River Wear, west of Sunderland city centre. The area has streets of terraces, local shops and allotments along Pallion New Road and the riverside. Shipbuilding shaped Pallion for much of the 19th and 20th centuries; the Austin & Pickersgill yards once stood on the riverfront and remnants of that industrial past can be found in street names and plot layouts. A riverside path runs beside the water and links to pedestrian routes toward the city centre, offering views back across the Wear.

High Barnes lies to the north of the city centre and is centred on Barnes Park, a Victorian green space with a bandstand, formal terraces and sports areas. The park acts as a focal point for local events and passes into residential streets lined with a mix of housing and small businesses. Schools, community centres and regular bus links connect High Barnes and Pallion with Sunderland's shopping and services, while neighbourhood groups run gardening and heritage projects that draw on the area's park and shipbuilding histories.
