About

Pewley Down occupies a south-facing chalk slope on the south‑eastern edge of Guildford. The site is a Local Nature Reserve made up of short chalk turf, scattered scrub and bands of flint in the soil. A network of footpaths crosses the slope and links into the town; common access points are Pewley Hill and paths from The Mount. The escarpment forms a distinct ridge above the lower streets and drops into a narrow belt of scrub and trees, where walkers often pause on the ridge line to follow the route across the down.

The Mount lies along one side of the down and is a residential street where back gardens meet the public open space. The Pewley Down Trust and local volunteers manage scrub and maintain the turf to support plants and insects associated with chalk grassland. In season the sward pieces together into a mosaic of grass and flowering plants, and the paths along the ridge provide a clear, direct route across the site for short walks and daily access from the adjacent neighbourhood.
