Purfleet

Purfleet-on-Thames sits on the north bank of the River Thames in the borough of Thurrock, Essex. The town mixes riverfront industry with residential streets and pockets of marshland to the north. Purfleet railway station is on the London, Tilbury and Southend line, providing regular services into Fenchurch Street, and the riverside quays and jetties still show its long connection with shipping and freight. History is visible in the townscape: Purfleet contains the remains of an 18th-century Royal Gunpowder Magazine, a complex built to store munitions for London and the navy, and the Purfleet Heritage & Military Centre records other local military links. The marshes and drainage channels nearby shape movement and land use, and conservation groups work with developers on flood risk and habitat management. Community events and heritage open days draw on that industrial and military past while planning continues for riverside regeneration and improved public access along the Thames.
