The area is primarily composed of housing estates, ranging from inter-war semis to more modern developments, with local shopping parades serving the community. Its eastern boundary is largely defined by the River Irwell, which separates it from the neighbouring borough of Bolton.

The ward contains several green spaces, including the recreational grounds at Close Park. A notable local landmark is the Radcliffe Tower, the solitary, fortified stone gatehouse remnant of a 15th-century manor house, which stands near the parish church.
