About

Radcliffe is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Bury, Greater Manchester, lying on the River Irwell to the south of Bury and northwest of Manchester. The town centre runs along Market Street and nearby streets, with a regular outdoor market and local shops serving surrounding neighbourhoods. Two Metrolink stops, Radcliffe and Radcliffe Bridge, link the town to Bury and Manchester on the light-rail network. River corridors and small public parks weave through residential areas and former industrial sites.

Industry shaped much of Radcliffe from the 18th century onwards, with mills and engineering works located on river banks; remnants of that period sit beside later housing. A masonry tower, the remains of the old manor house known locally as Radcliffe Tower, stands close to the Irwell and marks the town’s medieval footprint. Community centres, primary schools and allotments occupy plots between lanes of terraces and newer estates, and local volunteers manage pocket nature areas along the river that are used for walking and wildlife spotting.
