Salem

Salem is a neighbourhood in the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, Greater Manchester, located on the town’s northern fringe where built-up streets run into open ground. The area is mainly residential, with rows of late-19th and early-20th-century houses alongside later council and private developments. A short local high street provides everyday shops and bus stops with regular services into Oldham town centre and toward Manchester. Street patterns reflect the town’s industrial-era expansion, and some buildings show the region’s characteristic sandstone construction.

Community facilities include a primary school, a community hall and playing fields used by local teams and groups. To the north the edge of town gives way to fields and moorland, so many streets have clear views toward Oldham Edge and the South Pennines. That setting makes a short walk enough to get from dense residential streets to open slopes used for walking and local farming, while the neighbourhood remains within easy reach of Oldham’s services and rail links.
