Salisbury Bemerton

Bemerton lies just west of Salisbury city centre and began as a separate village before becoming part of the city. The area includes Bemerton Heath, a large mid-20th-century housing estate, together with pockets of older village streets, local shops, primary schools and community facilities. There are allotments, small public greens and playing fields used by local clubs, and routes that link the neighbourhood to nearby shopping streets and bus services. Housing ranges from traditional cottages to post-war terraces and more recent developments, reflecting changes in the area over time.

St Andrew’s Church and the adjoining rectory are in the heart of Bemerton and mark a long local history of parish life; the poet George Herbert served there in the 17th century and is buried at the church. That connection appears in church records and in the lanes nearby, where houses and path layouts retain the village pattern. Community groups run events at the centre on Bemerton Heath, and local volunteers look after small green spaces and allotment plots.
