About

Salisbury Cathedral stands on the city’s low plain, its foundations laid after the episcopal move from Old Sarum in the early 13th century. The cathedral’s medieval spire rises to 123 metres (404 feet), the tallest church spire in the United Kingdom, and the octagonal Chapter House contains one of the four surviving original copies of the 1215 Magna Carta. Much of the cathedral complex, including the Close, dates from the medieval period and provides long, clear sightlines to the spire from the surrounding streets and riverbanks.

Across the River Avon to the south, Harnham occupies the floodplain where channels and sluices shape a patchwork of meadows and towpaths. The Harnham Water Meadows offer an extensive network of walks and cycling routes that run beside the river and around reed beds, with seasonal flooding that maintains the wetland habitat. Harnham Bridge and minor crossings connect the suburb to the city centre, so the route between cathedral and meadows is frequently used by locals for short walks and commuting by bike.
