Sandgate & West Folkestone

Sandgate & West Folkestone is a coastal ward stretching from the edge of Folkestone town centre westwards along the shoreline. The area encompasses the historic village of Sandgate, known for its seafront promenade and linear high street running parallel to the coast. Inland, the terrain rises sharply onto the Folkestone Downs, with residential streets offering panoramic views over the English Channel. The ward includes the West Cliff area and the lower slopes of the hills, creating a distinct topography.

The shingle beach and concrete sea defences are a dominant feature, with the Royal Military Canal terminating near Sandgate Castle. This 16th-century artillery fort, built by Henry VIII, sits directly on the beach. The area is largely residential, with a mix of architectural styles from Georgian and Victorian to modern infill. Local life centres on Sandgate’s independent shops and eateries, while the Leas Cliff Hall, a prominent entertainment venue, is perched on the cliffs above.
