Shortstown

Shortstown is a residential area located directly south of Bedford's town centre, bordered by the A421 to the north and open countryside to the south. The housing is primarily a mix of post-war semis-detached homes and more recent modern estates, providing a settled community atmosphere. Local amenities are centred along Cotton End Road, featuring essential shops, a primary school, and several parks.

The ward is historically defined by its connection to aviation, being the original site of the Royal Airship Works. The distinctive, elongated Cardington Sheds, built to house airships like the R101, remain dominant landmarks on the southern skyline. These immense structures, now used for film studios and testing, are a constant physical reminder of the area's unique industrial heritage.
