About

Silver End grew up around the Crittall Windows works in the interwar years when Francis Henry Crittall commissioned housing and community buildings for his workforce. The settlement has rows of purpose-built houses and the industrial workshops that gave the village its plan. Many homes retain large steel-framed window openings and the factory frontage remains part of the street pattern, reflecting the link between workplace and housing that shaped the area. The layout and 20th-century architecture are part of what defines the village today.

Stisted sits close by amid arable fields and hedgerows, with a parish church, lanes and scattered farmsteads that mark a more traditional rural pattern. The church contains medieval fabric and later repair work, and the village retains small-scale community features such as a village hall and local green spaces. Together the two places show different phases of local development: one planned around industry, the other following older agricultural settlement patterns.
