About

South Canterbury lies in the southern part of New Zealand's Canterbury region, running from the foothills of the Southern Alps across river plains to the Pacific coast around Timaru. The area includes the Timaru, Waimate and Mackenzie districts and has a mix of coastal port activity, farming and small service towns. Timaru is the main centre and the Port of Timaru handles goods for the region. Braided rivers that drain from the Alps cross the plains and support irrigation and cropping, while sheep and dairy farms remain a major land use. Near Temuka and Waitohi there are local histories tied to Richard Pearse, who carried out early powered flight experiments in the area around 1903.

West of the plains the Mackenzie Basin opens into high country with glacial lakes Tekapo and Pukaki and wide tussock country. The basin is part of an international dark sky reserve and attracts stargazing alongside fishing, tramping and alpine access; ski fields such as Mount Dobson are nearby. Smaller towns like Geraldine and Waimate offer heritage buildings, workshops and food producers that serve the rural hinterland.
