South Hylton

South Hylton is a residential area situated at the southern terminus of the Metro system, marking the point where urban Sunderland meets the wider countryside. The River Wear curves around its western edge, with the A19 providing a major transport route to the east. Housing is primarily a mix of interwar and post-war estates, along with more modern developments, creating a settled community atmosphere. The local landscape is characterised by green spaces and proximity to the river's final stretches before it meets the North Sea.

A notable local landmark is the functional, modern South Hylton Road Bridge, which contrasts with the older, decorative bridges further upstream in the city centre.
