St George's

St George's ward covers the northern section of Canvey Island, a low-lying area in the Thames Estuary. The landscape is predominantly residential, characterised by post-war housing estates and bungalows. The geography is defined by its proximity to the water, with the Benfleet Creek forming its western boundary and the Thames to the north. This low-lying position has necessitated a network of flood defences, including the substantial sea wall that encircles much of the island's perimeter.

The area is largely self-contained, with local shopping parades serving daily needs along Furtherwick Road. A significant feature is the large oil storage terminal situated on the north-west coast, an industrial presence that has shaped the local economy and skyline for decades. Open space is provided by the grassy slopes and paths of the sea wall itself, offering views across the mudflats and water, a reminder of the ward's maritime setting.
