St Stephen ward occupies the south-eastern edge of the city of St Albans. The area is largely residential, characterised by housing developments from the mid-20th century alongside more modern estates. It is bordered by the A414 to the south and includes the commercial area around London Colney. The ward contains several schools and local shops catering primarily to its residents.

The district includes the large recreational space of Verulamium Park, which extends along the River Ver. This park contains the remains of the Roman city of Verulamium, including a preserved section of the city walls.
