About

Stanhope sits in the valley of the River Wear in County Durham, where the town hugs the river and the A689 runs through the centre. The parish church of St Thomas stands near the main street and the town acts as a local service point for farms and settlements along Weardale. The Weardale Railway heritage line and a network of lanes and footpaths link Stanhope with neighbouring villages and the higher ground of Upper Weardale, making the town a common base for walkers and local services.

The dale widens and narrows along the Wear, with past and present industry evident in old mine workings, limekilns and quarries. At the head of the valley the Killhope Lead Mining Museum preserves an engine house and displays on the lead industry that shaped local communities. Beds of Frosterley “marble” occur in places close to Stanhope and have been worked for decorative stone for centuries, while the Weardale Way and other routes run along the river and onto surrounding moorland.
