Staplehurst

Staplehurst is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Maidstone, Kent, set where the River Beult crosses low-lying farmland. The parish grew around a main street and the railway, and the station remains a local focal point with regular services to London and Ashford. The river’s floodplain meadows form part of a protected landscape and fields around the village still show traces of hop gardens and apple orchards, a farming pattern that shaped local settlement. In 1865 a train derailment at Staplehurst drew national attention; Charles Dickens was among the survivors and helped other passengers, an episode remembered in local accounts.

Local life centres on a handful of shops, pubs, a primary school and sports clubs that use village halls and recreation grounds. Housing mixes older cottages and post-war development, while lanes and footpaths link the village to surrounding farmland. Community events and groups meet through the year, and the station’s services make commuting to larger towns possible without bringing in city-scale development.
